English is the most popular in Vietnam. In tourist destinations like Hanoi, Da Nang, Nha Trang and Ho Chi Minh City, people can speak English at a decent level, so it’s quite convenient for Vietnam discovery tours. However, when traveling in rural areas, it is advisable to download a few translation apps on your smartphone so that you do not encounter language barriers.
Unfortunately, taxi scams are a concern for travelers in Vietnam. Use only reputable taxi companies, such as Taxi Group in Hanoi (red and blue horizontal stripes), Vinasun in Ho Chi Minh City (white taxis) and Mai Linh in both cities (green taxis). Grab, Bee and GoViet are also available to book rides in major cities in Vietnam if you have a Vietnamese SIM card.
Currently, there is no vaccination requirement before entering Vietnam, unless travelers are arriving from the yellow fever area (countries in South America and Africa). However, be careful and check your health record and make sure you are vaccinated against at least the following diseases: typhoid, tetanus, poliomyelitis and hepatitis.
