The Irrawaddy Delta covers an area of over 1000 square miles with Rangoon its most famous port and the capital of all of Burma in the past. Originally it was a vast wetland and inhabited jungle, much of which was cleared and cultivated by the British who annexed Lower Burma. It then became the rice bowl of Asia, effectively feeding much of the Indian Raj. Our Katha Pandaw 8 days cruise allows for a relaxed exploration of this fascinating region, with departure and return in Rangoon.
Early departure from Yangon via the Twante Canal, stopping at Twante to see the pottery, then on to Pyapon (64 miles), a charming delta town and seaport with wharfs and bustling markets.
Extend your stay and embark a day earlier in bed & breakfast aboard your Pandaw for an extra night. Enjoy the experience and perspective of staying in central Yangon from your luxurious river boat.
Bogale, in the heart of the delta, was once a Mon capital and trading port connected to international trade routes between the 15th and 18th centuries. It is home to the only mangrove ecosystem reserve in the delta. A visit to the monastery of the city will be organized.
This will be the most fascinating sailing day, as we cross the heart of the delta through creeks and channels. We will stop for a walk in a suitable village.
Morning cruise through the last section of the delta to join the great Bassein river which takes us to Bassein, the capital of the delta and also an important seaport. Of interest are the traditional umbrella factories, where the typical oilcloth umbrellas of the monks are made. We will walk through the city, its shrines and bustling markets.
Free day in this charming port town and optional excursion by car to Ngwesaung beach with lunch on site.
Depart in the morning with lunch to follow, taking the more usual upper delta route of the former IFC “launch service” between Rangoon and Bassein. In the evening, discover this attractive river port.
On the busiest canals, there are many boats and the banks are full of life and activity. Maubin is a stunning place to enjoy a sunset stroll along its colorful shoreline.
Morning, crossing the Twante Canal and returning to the Rangoon River. We dock in the colonial city center and disembark between 12:00 p.m. and 12:30 p.m. (lunch not included).
