Luang Prabang, the former royal capital of the Lane Xang Kingdom, is renowned for its gleaming temple roofs, colonial architecture, and stunning mountain scenery, offering a unique charm seldom seen in Asia. Key attractions include Wat Visoun‘s impressive stupa, Wat Aham‘s shrine, and Wat Mai with its five-tiered roof. If time permits, you can join a half-day guided tour covering these sites and culminating with a climb up Phousi Hill for a breathtaking sunset view over the town and Mekong River. The ascent involves 329 steps, leading past various temples to the sacred, gilded stupa of Wat Phousi at the summit.

Today, our exploration of Luang Prabang continues with a visit to the magnificent Wat Xieng Thong, located at the confluence of the Mekong and Nam Khan Rivers. The temple boasts intricate gilded stuccoes and doorways, with a stunning ‘tree of life’ mosaic on its main sim.
We then embark on a boat trip along the Mekong River, stopping at Ban Xang Hai to see local rice wine distillation. The journey continues through breathtaking mountain scenery to the Pak Ou Caves, filled with thousands of gold-lacquered Buddha statues. Afterward, we drive to Ban Phanom to observe traditional hand weaving.

The Plain of Jars is a remarkable archaeological site with hundreds of large stone jars scattered across the plateau, believed to be over 2,000 years old. Archaeologists remain uncertain about their purpose. Today, we will explore this site and visit nearby villages inhabited by the Hmong hill tribe, known for their rich culture and colorful history.
We then travel to Vang Vieng, a once tranquil village now popular with tourists, yet still boasting stunning scenery of calm waters and limestone formations. Depending on road conditions, we should arrive by mid to late afternoon.

We begin our day with a walk through the lively central market. Next, we take a short bamboo boat ride along the Nam Song River, offering a touch of adventure and a visit to the historic Tham Jang cave, once a hideout from Chinese invaders. We also cross the river to explore Ban Huai Ngai, a charming village showcasing local life.
Afterward, we travel by road to Vientiane, the capital of Laos, situated along the Mekong River and known for its unique blend of Lao, Thai, Chinese, Vietnamese, and French influences.

Our full-day tour of Vientiane starts at Wat Sisaket, the city’s oldest surviving temple, renowned for its stunning frescoes and Buddha statues. Next, we visit the former royal temple of Haw Phra Kaew, once home to the famous Emerald Buddha. We then see the imposing Patouxay Monument, Vientiane’s own Arc de Triomphe, followed by That Luang Stupa, a symbol of Laos.
Outside the city, we explore Buddha Park, featuring a mix of Buddhist and Hindu sculptures by the Mekong River, and view the Friendship Bridge linking Laos and Thailand. The day concludes with a spectacular sunset over the Mekong River from a riverside bar.

We start early, driving towards Khammouane province with several stops along the way for breaks and photo opportunities. Depending on road and traffic conditions, we aim to arrive at Ban Na Hin, the gateway to Khong Lor Cave, by mid to late afternoon. Upon arrival, we take a short walk around this charming village to gain insight into the local culture and lifestyle.

Khong Lor Cave, an incredible 7.5 km-long formation created by the Hinboun River, flows year-round through its length. Today, we drive to the cave, stopping first for a short walk to visit That Mouang and That Nams Waterfalls.
Enjoy a picnic lunch along the way. We then take a small boat for an impressive journey through the main cave to the valley beyond, pausing to admire the stalactite formations. This cave continues to serve as a route for local villagers.

Our next destination is Tadlo. The drive takes us through lush plantations, rolling hills, dense forests, and vibrant villages. The striking contrast between the lush greenery and the red basaltic soil is remarkable. Along the way, we visit the stunning Tad Fan waterfall and nearby villages of the Kato hill tribe, who maintain their distinct cultural traditions and attire. We continue through Paksong and the Bolaven Plateau, enjoying the scenic countryside and engaging with local people.

After breakfast at the hotel, we drive back to Pakse and take a leisurely trip to Champasak, the former royal capital and our base for exploring the Wat Phu ruins. Known as the most significant Hindu sanctuary of the Khmer Empire from the 9th to the 13th century, Wat Phu hosts an annual festival during the February full moon, attracting many pilgrims.
After visiting Wat Phu, we head towards the 4000 Islands, our final destination.

Leaving the town, we take a long-tail boat to explore the widest stretch of the Mekong River, where thousands of islets appear during the dry season, known as “Si Phan Don.” We stop at Ban Khone, a peaceful island with French colonial relics and the impressive Liphi waterfall, also called the “Corridor of the Devil.”
We also visit local villages and see remnants of the first Lao railway with its locomotive. Continuing on a small motorboat, we explore fishing villages and may spot the rare Irrawaddy Mekong dolphins at Ban Hang Khone.

Then, take a cruise to Ban Nakasung, from which you will join a drive to the Laos – Cambodia border, en route stop to visit the Khone Phapheng waterfall – the biggest waterfall in Southeast Asia, also known as the Niagara of the East.
