Angkor is a complex of Cambodian relics, history, culture, and religion in the northwest of Tonle Sap, Siem Reap province. It was the former capital of the Khmer Kingdom from the 9th to the 15th century. In Sanskrit, “Angkor” means “city.” According to archaeologists, this is one of the largest cities in the world from the pre-industrial periods, spanning 1,150 square miles.
The Angkor Complex was recognized as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site in 1992. The whole complex is a vast territory including more than 80 monuments built during the period from the 7th to the 8th centuries. They are stone structures of mountain-temple type of Hinduism and Buddhism. The most famous are Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom, two of the five largest temples in the Angkor Complex.
If you are planning a Cambodia tour, choose to visit Angkor in the dry season. During this time, rain is rare, giving the region a very pleasant climate for visiting temples. In addition, the weather is nice almost every day, so you can enjoy a radiant sun during your stay.
January and February are the best months for Angkor tours. The weather is drier, the rainfall is much less frequent, and the temperature is more pleasant. Indeed, it is cooler at this time of the year, which is quite ideal for an Angkor tour. The period from February to April is much hotter than the beginning of the year as the temperature rises sharply. So, be prepared to bear the heat if you visit Angkor during this time.
The largest and most important temple in the Angkor complex, Angkor Wat temple is adorned with a majestic and magical allure at the edge of a vast green lake which will overwhelm you the first time you visit. There is nothing better than admiring the lovely landscape of the Angkor Wat temple at sunrise as you can contemplate the temple at its most beautiful.
Located about 2 kilometers from the city of Siem Reap, right on the bank of the Tonle Sap River, Angkor Thom is the capital of the archaeological city of Angkor, Cambodia. It is indeed a great city that reflects the charming beauty of Angkorian culture. This is also a true witness to the greatness of this empire.
Appearing in the top 3 of the must-visit temples in Angkor, the Bayon temple is impressive with its 54 towers, each of them carved in four directions with the face of the genius Lokesvara, symbolizing the observation of the Genius. Visiting Bayon temple, you will be lost in a mysterious, moving, and inspiring world.
Being famous and attracting a lot of tourists after the film Tomb Raider, the temple of Ta Prohm is also one of the most popular tourist spots in the Angkor Complex. Nestled in the jungle of Siem Reap province, a few kilometers east of Angkor Wat, the temple still retains its authenticity and original appearance until now. If you are planning your Angkor tours, never miss this magnificent temple of Ta Prohm.
Literally meaning “the citadel of Samre,” Banteay Samre is one of the most gorgeous Hindu mountain temples in the archaeological complex of Angkor. It is located about 500 meters east of the eastern baray, 18 kilometers from Siem Reap province. Less crowded than other Angkorian temples, this place showcases the Khmer culture and architecture in a very calm and peaceful environment.
Banteay Srei, which means the citadel of women, is a Hindu temple located 20 kilometers northeast of Bayon Temple, on the site of the ancient city of Isvarapura, near the Phnom Dei mountain. Thanks to the excellent preservation of its architecture and mythological decoration, Banteay Srei is considered the jewel in the crown of Khmer culture. Its decorations are among the most beautiful engravings of the Angkor Complex.
